Traditional martial arts are often considered a “fighting” or “self-defense” sport. But today’s martial artists often practice improving physical strength and flexibility while increasing mental and emotional well-being. Unlike many traditional team sports, martial arts are focused on individual growth and goal setting. Our children’s Kung Fu program also features a heavy focus on character development.

Building strong character traits such as self-confidence, respect for others, improved focus, increased self-discipline, and better conflict resolution skills are essential for all children. The focused instruction in Martial Arts class is beneficial for children who may face additional challenges like Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD.)

The Benefits of Martial Arts for ADHD

Nurturing Environment

At US Kuo Shu Academy, we provide students with an environment that is conducive to their individual success. Our supportive, accepting, and communal space is built on mutual respect, and your child will ALWAYS feel supported and encouraged. Children with ADHD will benefit from:

  • A safe space to release excess energy. (Physical activity, kicking, and punching release energy they’ve been holding onto all day.)
  • Clear and specific individualized goals that are attainable.
  • Predictable structure and clear expectations for behavior.
  • Positive and consistent reinforcement for reaching expectations.

Focus on Developmental Growth

Social – We promote and teach the importance of respect, accountability, honesty, teamwork, leadership, and integrity. Your child will learn how to effectively communicate with instructors and other students while taking ownership of their own social skills.

Emotional – We build courage, perseverance, and self-confidence that go well beyond the mat. We inspire children to let go of limitations and continue through setbacks and failures to reach for success. When individualized, attainable goals are achieved, self-confidence is a natural result.

Intellectual – Focus, and self-discipline are the foundations of success in martial arts training. By concentrating on these skills as a requirement of reaching those individualized goals, children with ADHD effectively exercise their brain, like a muscle, to improve concentration, memory, and more.

Physical – As briefly touched on above, physical activity is one of the most important releases for children with ADHD/ADD. It stimulates their brain and improves focus. They can let go of extra energy – without being scolded. By training the body to improve coordination, balance, speed, agility, flexibility and all-around athleticism, children are abler and willing to spend their energy in a productive way through play, sports, or exercise.
